Plan a move before lifting a large pot

A large planted pot can be much heavier and less stable than it looks.

A large planted pot can be much heavier and less stable than it looks. Plan the move before lifting or pulling it.

Check the container, route and destination. Include thresholds, steps and the condition of the supporting surface. Consider the loaded weight and any property restrictions, especially on balconies or shelves. Use suitable assistance or professional handling where necessary; do not test your limit with a fragile container full of soil.

Prepare the landing place

Make sure the destination is stable and appropriate for the plant's needs. Check drainage and the saucer arrangement so the move does not create a water problem. Clear the route without blocking exits or placing tools where someone can trip.

Protect the plant according to species-specific guidance and avoid pulling on stems or supports as handles. Follow the instructions for any moving equipment. A pot that appears solid may have cracks or weak parts, so seek advice if its condition is uncertain.

After the move, inspect the arrangement and record the new position and date. Observe the plant over time rather than making several additional care changes immediately. A successful move leaves both the container and the person safe, with a usable care route. The aim is an appropriate location, not simply completing the lift in one attempt.
