Keep a record when changing a potting mix

A potting-mix change is easier to learn from when its details are recorded.

A potting-mix change is easier to learn from when its details are recorded. Keep the product, plant and date together rather than remembering only that you tried something different.

Identify the plant and consult a reliable horticultural source for its growing-medium needs. Record the pot size, drainage arrangement and the mix's label information. Use appropriate handling precautions from the packaging, and avoid improvising with unknown materials or unverified online recipes.

Change one question at a time

If practical and suitable for the plant, keep other care conditions consistent while observing the change. Moving the plant, changing the pot and altering watering at once makes it difficult to understand the result. Some work cannot be separated, so record the combined changes honestly.

Note observations at sensible intervals: the condition of new growth, the way the medium behaves and the watering decisions you make. Do not diagnose a nutrient problem from a single leaf colour without further evidence. Seek appropriate advice for persistent or serious symptoms.

Keep a photograph of the label and a short note about why the mix was chosen. The record need not be elaborate. It should let you repeat a suitable arrangement or explain what happened when asking for help, without relying on a vague memory of a bag bought several months earlier.
