Look closely before cleaning a leaf

Before cleaning a leaf, check what kind of surface it has and whether cleaning is appropriate.

Before cleaning a leaf, check what kind of surface it has and whether cleaning is appropriate. A glossy leaf and a hairy one should not automatically receive the same treatment.

Identify the plant and consult a reliable care reference. Look for ordinary dust, damage or signs that need a different response. Do not rub an unfamiliar coating away simply because it looks untidy. Avoid household polishes, oils or improvised sprays unless suitable guidance specifically supports their use.

Inspect without adding damage

Support the plant appropriately and work in good light. Use the recommended method and suitable clean materials, keeping pressure gentle. Test no treatment on a valuable or vulnerable plant merely to see what happens. Seek horticultural advice when symptoms suggest pests or disease.

Keep water and debris away from electrical items and vulnerable furniture. Avoid leaving a pot in an unsuitable location after the task just because it was convenient for cleaning. Return it to the appropriate care arrangement.

Record what prompted the cleaning and what you used. If the same deposit reappears, investigate its source rather than increasing the treatment. A useful inspection may end with doing nothing more than observing. The aim is suitable care for a living surface, not an artificially uniform shine across every leaf in a display.
